| Homegroup Leaders' Notes for 5 December 2004 | |
| Aim | To challenge our attitudes towards the society in which we live. |
| Welcome | What is the longest period of time you have spent on your own? What was it like? |
| Worship | Read David's Psalm of thanks together from 1 Chronicles 16:7-36, reading a paragraph each but all saying "Amen" and "Praise the Lord" together at the end. This passage contains material from Psalms 105, 96 and 106. It will be more familiar in NIV or older versions of the Bible. |

Read Matthew 3:1-12 John the Baptist - some background (from Frances Briscoe)
Questions 1. John fearlessly denounced evil wherever he found it in church, state and society. What evils do you think he would be denouncing in our world today? Try to suggest what we should or could be doing to tackle them. 2. Are there evils in our locality which we should be working to eradicate ? If so how as a Christian community might we set about doing so? 3 John pointed beyond himself to Jesus. How might we do this both individually and corporately? Extra questions 1 How would you like to have John the Baptist as your pastor? How would his dress code be accepted in our church? 2 What angered John so much about the Sadducees and Pharisees? 3 What do the images of judgement mean: The coming wrath? The axe? The fire? His winnowing fork? |
| Witness | Pray for boldness to preach the Gospel. Pray that you will not be put off by fearing what people will think of you or how it will affect your standing in the eyes of those you are in contact with day by day. |
