St Luke's Church, Great Crosby

Homegroup Leaders' Notes for 1 May 2005

Aim To see how St Paul builds bridges with the people of Athens in his desire to share the good news about Jesus.
Welcome If you had to introduce yourself with a piece of music (pop, classical, folk, rock) which piece would you choose and why?
Worship

Read Psalm 50:1-15 together. Note the attributes of God that the psalmist describes. God is a great God bigger than we can ever conceive or imagine, a holy God and yet one who cares for us.

Meditation:
1. Give each member of the group something small eg a pea, a nut, a bean.
2. In silence, ask them to hold it in the palm of their hand and look at it.
3. Ask them to imagine that it represents the universe and their hand represents God's hand.
4. Invite the members of the group to worship God in their own words.

Word

Read Acts 17: 22-34.
This is Paul's sermon to the Athenians and demonstrates how he tailors his presentation to his hearers so that they can hear better.

vv 22-23: What impression is Paul trying to create amongst his hearers?
vv 24-28: Which aspect of 'God' does Paul talk about first? What picture of God is Paul drawing?
vv 29-31: Why does Paul not mention the name of Jesus during his talk? How does the resurrection prove that there will be a 'day of justice'?
vv 32-34: What do you notice about the reaction of Paul's hearers?

Application: What things can we learn from Paul's method and experience for our lives today?

Witness

a) Make a list of the 'world views' and values that the people you know have? e.g. they believe in 'God' and accept all religions as equal, they believe the acquisition of 'things' is the most important pursuit in life.

b) Look down the list and ask yourselves: how should we as Christians respond to people holding these different world views and values?

c) Pray for your friends or family and pray for help in putting into practice what we have learned.
