St Luke's Church, Great Crosby

Homegroup Leaders' Notes for 15 May 2005

Welcome Ask the group to describe in one word what feelings come to mind when the topic of the Holy Spirit is mentioned.
Worship lay or listen to reflective songs welcoming the Spirit's presence. Such as -

Holy Spirit We Welcome You
Come Holy Spirit
Spirit of the Living God
River Wash over Me
Move Holy Spirit

(These are suggestions only)

Word Read -

Acts 2:1-21
Romans 8
1 Corinthians 2:9-12
1 Corinthians 12:1-11

(i) Ask the group to share their experiences of the Holy Spirit. How did they feel? How did others react? Has this led to change - if so what?

(ii) Has anybody had a negative experience - either from criticism or excessive enthusiasm?!

(iii) What do they think it means to understand the mind of God which Paul refers to in 1 Corinthians 2? (cf Ephesians 1:17-19)

(iv) What does it mean to have a 'Spirit of Sonship' which Paul writes about in Romans 8? Does this influence your image of God?

(v) What is the point of the gifts of the spirit? Have any of the group experienced gifts? Ask them to share (if appropriate) - especially focussing on how this helped them and others.

(vi) Does anybody wish they had any gift? If so discuss why and the particular gift - if any?

If it feels appropriate move into a short time of prayer and ministry asking the spirit to come minister to the group.

Witness How might the work of the Spirit help the church in its witness? Is there any place for Signs and Wonders/Power Evangelism? How are people likely to react? Have any actually experienced this? Was it helpful?
