Study 3
Penitential P
rayer

Welcome Share an occasion when you accidentally broke something or ran into somebody without owning up. (This may take a little courage!)
Worship Get each member of the group to praise God for something that he has done for them in the last week (no matter how small it may seem).
Word

Read Psalm 51 together.

1. People think Christianity makes people feel guilty. The BCP based on things written in the 16th century by Thomas Cranmer asks us to "bewail our manifold sins and wickedness". How does confession help us to know where we are with God?

2. What comfortable words does God give us when we repent (read 1 John 1:8-9).

3. Do we need God's help to repent and to see ourselves as God sees us (Psalm 139:23-24)?

4. How can we assess ourselves before God and do we need to spend time meditating on our lives in the light of the ten commandments?

5. Is confession to each other a useful thing to do? Does it help us to call to mind where we have gone wrong?

6. When we think of the state of the world do we need to say sorry for our part in that?

7. What are the dangers of not feeling forgiven. If we have stopped praying is there any reason not to start praying again or should we sincerely say we are sorry and then get on with it?

Witness

Consider this sequence.

1. Know the love of God.

2. Ask for the gift of repentance.

3. Confess.

4. Receive God's forgiveness (absolution).

Read 1 John 1:5-10 then pray that God will make our lives shine as light in the world as we obey God's call to obedience.
