Homegroup Leaders' Notes for 1 October 2006
  Objections to Christianity
2. Jesus is not the only way to God
Welcome

Describe to the rest of the group a time when you got lost somewhere and couldn't find your way to the place where you were going. What happened? How did you find your way in the end?

This session helps us think about Jesus's central importance to Christianity and we would be 'lost' without him.

Worship Read Hebrews 1:1-4 and then use some of the phrases in these verses to turn into prayers of praise with perhaps each member of the group taking it in turns. You could also sing 'Jesus, name above all names' or 'Jesus what a beautiful name' (Hillsong). Whatever you do, your worship time needs to focus on Jesus.
Word

Read John 14:1-9

Jesus is speaking with his disciples and knows that he will soon be put to death. He tries to prepare them for that event by comparing his death to going home.

Begin by reading the passage together and then going back through it to make sure that you understand the main points of what Jesus is saying, ie trust me, I am going and coming back, I am the way, the truth and the life, the Father and I are one.

Specific questions (a selection):

  • What does 'I am the way, the truth and the life' actually mean?
  • What does 'No-one comes to the Father except through me' mean?
  • Is Jesus being unfair to people?
  • Is there any good to be found in other religions?
  • What makes Jesus different from all other religious figures?
  • Do we find Jesus or does he find us?
  • Is it arrogant of Christians to suggest that they know the way?
  • How does this knowledge of Jesus affect our attitude to those not yet Christians?
Witness

The next time we hear someone say Jesus is not the only way to God, what will we say?

Pray for someone who is not yet a Christian that they will understand who Jesus really is and that he is the One and not just one among many.
