Relationships
1 Where did we come from?

Welcome Go round the group one by one asking the rest of the group to name 3 or 4 things for which they thank God in that person. The only rule is that they should be true. For example, 'I thank God that you are so patient and dedicated in what you do.' This will be a great opportunity to affirm and encourage each member of your group at the start of a new year.
Worship Psalm 8 speaks of our place in creation. Read it together, perhaps each member reading one verse and then use the words of this psalm to turn them into short phrases of praise. You may also like to sing a song like I'm special as part of this time.
Word

The key concept we want to get across in this series on relationships is that God created us and God knows best. He knows how we were meant to work and we need to discover that for ourselves. Variety and difference are not something to be feared but to be welcomed and celebrated.

Read together Genesis 1.26-31 (When God says in verse 26 'Let us make man …' some bible commentators believe that 'we' is a reference to the Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. See also Colossians 1.15-16).

v26: What does 'in our image' mean? What does 'ruling over' mean?
v27: Why did God make 'male and female'? Compare Genesis 2.18-25.

Other questions

1. What value does God put on human life as opposed to other forms of life? Why do you think that is?

2. Is the value of human life being eroded in society today? How can we affirm the value of human life?

3. What are the things that are similar for male and female and what are the things that are different?

4. Are there specific roles for male and female to perform within church and society?

5. Why is the church more attractive to women than it is for men? What can we do about this?

6. When we say that Jesus is the image of the invisible God, do we relate to him in different ways depending on whether we are male or female?

Witness When it comes to the issues of 'male and female' within church life, what are the things we should be doing that the world does not do to show that God's ways are different?
