Haggai 2.1-9

Welcome Give each person the opportunity to talk about the fire that gutted St Luke’s in June 1972. Some will have personal recollections, others won’t but will have heard from others. What good came from this event, if any?
Worship

God has many names; speak out loud as many of them as you can think of as a group and use them as a basis for your worship. If it helps, go through the alphabet and think of a name beginning with a different letter eg Ancient of Days, Bread of life, Counsellor,…

Jesus, name above all names could then be sung together.

Word

Read passage Haggai 2.1-9

vv 1-3    Why was this the right time for Haggai to bring another word from the Lord?
What are the people thinking about the re-building plans? (Ezra 3:12)
vv 4-5 Why do they need to take courage? what was the promise? (Exodus 29: 45-46)
What is significant about the title: ‘Lord of hosts’?
vv 6-9 How and why will God ‘shake ‘things?
Why will the splendour of the latter house be greater than the former?

Questions for us:

1. In church life, is there such a thing as the ‘good old days’? How can we learn from them rather than be trapped by them?
2. If comparisons are not helpful, what are?
3. How are we to ‘work’ as Christians? (Colossians 3.23-24)
4. How important is it to know that God is with us?
5. ‘In a time of financial crisis, the best thing that Christians can do is to keep on giving’: discuss.
6. As a church, what can we look forward to?
7. How does our past, our present and our future as a church link together?

Witness Discuss what happened when you talked about the re-building plans with another person (see last session’s notes). If you’ve not had the opportunity to speak to someone, then pray that you will get that opportunity If you have, you might like to pray for that person on a regular basis from now on. If they are not yet a Christian, you might pray for opportunity to invite them to a Christian event. If they are, still pray for them! Remember: God hears our prayers!
