Haggai 2.20-23

Welcome From Palm Sunday to Easter Day, which aspect of Holy Week captures your imagination the most?
Worship

Read 1 Peter 2.4-10.

Allow the words to sink in and meditate on them quietly as a group. Then let God direct your worship. Think of Jesus as the cornerstone and of each other as stones and thank God for Jesus and for one another. Sing ‘For I’m building a people of power’.

Word

Read passage Haggai 2.20-23

vv 20-22    Thinking back over the prophecy as a whole, who are these kingdoms of the nations?
Why would this be good news to the people of Jerusalem?
How would God bring this about?
Wwhy does God announce in v 21 what he is ‘about to do’?
v 23 What is a signet ring?
Whose family is Zerubbabel from? (see Matthew 1.13)
What is the significance of this prophecy? (see Jeremiah 22.24-5)
Although this is addressed to Zerubbabel, what impact would this have on the people?
What is the connection with Jesus and how is this prophecy fulfilled by him?

Questions for us:

1. How important is vision to doing God’s work and will?
2. Is there a difference between working for God and working with God? If there is, what is it?
3. Do we have any sense of what God is ‘about to do’? Is it important that we should know?
4. How can we as a church ‘hear’ the Word of the Lord? Is it just through preaching on Sundays?
5. We ‘build more than we can see’. do you agree with this?
6. In what sense is our giving to the re-building of St Luke’s an investment?
7. What is the relationship between the church as a building and the church as a people? Can both be built at the same time?
8. What have you learnt through the study of Haggai?

Witness Easter is coming up and there are many events during this time not just for ourselves but also for others. Have a discussion amongst the group and think about who you might invite to them. There will also be Easter invitations to give out by streets, this could be a group activity.
