Welcome Share your favourite hobby or pastime and explain to the rest of the group what you do to indulge it.
Worship

Explore the theme of thanking God for one another and for the fact that he has made each one of us unique. The group might not have met for a few weeks and so this is a good beginning to think about what you have in common.

Having done that focus your worship on Jesus, you could have someone read Colossians 1.15-20, for example, or a gospel passage in which Jesus heals or performs a miracle to illustrate. Be careful to focus on who Jesus is rather than on what He does.

Word

Read John 15.1-8.

Before examining the passage verse by verse it would be helpful to get the picture of the vine, the branches, the fruit and the vine grower clear in the group’s mind and what each represents.

v 1 What does this verse tell us about the relationship between Jesus and his Father?
v 2 How do you think God removes branches that bear no fruit? how do you think God prunes those branches that do bear fruit?
v 3 What does Jesus mean by this?
v 4 What do you think ‘abide’ means?
vv 5-6   Why is it important that branches should bear ‘much fruit’? is Jesus’ warning about those that don’t bear much fruit too severe? How does this fit with Jesus’ love?
v 7 What is the condition for asking for whatever you wish and receiving it?
v 8 What does glorifying the Father mean?

1. Thinking back to the welcome exercise, what sort of parallels are there between the way in which we indulge our hobby/pastime and the way in which we practice our Christian faith e.g. wanting to meet with others.

2. Andrew Murray says about this passage: ‘We want to appropriate his (Christ’s) power but fail to appreciate his person. We want to have guidance but ignore the Guide’. Do you agree with him? If so what do we need to do about it?

3. How do we ‘abide’ in Christ? what stops us from abiding?

4. As Christians and as a church, is there a risk that our energies can be drained by too much activity? How can we, as Christians and as a church, stop this from happening?

5. Who should decide what activities a church should be involved in and what should be stopped (pruned)?

Witness Discuss as a group how you can make the most of Back to Church Sunday? What are your hopes and fears? Pray for those you are inviting. If you don’t know anyone, ask the group to suggest someone!!
