Sefton Women’s & Children’s Aid
I would like to introduce you to SWACA, a local charity now included
in the missions supported by St Luke’s. I became involved in SWACA after the death of a very close friend who was passionate about
the work and always encouraging me to help. This passion was contagious once I realised the invaluable work they do in our community.
2000 women and children every year in Sefton suffer some form of domestic violence. SWACA is a registered charity that provides free
and confidential services to all women, children and young people who are survivors of domestic violence including physical, sexual,
emotional/verbal, financial and/or social abuse. Children living with domestic violence can experience a range of emotions including
fear, sadness, anger, anxiety, stress and isolation. SWACA provides practical and emotional support in a variety of ways including a
helpline; one-to one support; group work; counselling; welfare and benefits advice; refuge and domestic violence awareness training.
I would like to thank you for focusing on and supporting SWACA during the month of November. Pam Stubbs

What was agreed at the PCC Meeting held on Wednesday 3 October 2007
It
was agreed to accept Simon Elliott to be a curate here from the summer of 2008. He is training for ordination at Ridley
Hall in Cambridge. He is married to Lisa, a primary school teacher. They are both excited about coming back to Liverpool where
they first met and have worked already.
[For a larger picture of Simon and Lisa click on the small picture of Simon.
Simon has a blog: Scouse Ordinand.]
Eric Linford reported that as of 24 September 2007 we had £58,000
in restricted funds (of which £40,000 is for Giving in Grace) and £25,000 in the general purposes fund of which £10,000
is reserves.
It was agreed that we should ask our quinquennial architect to draw up plans
to re-roof the vestry area as soon as possible and the main church area after that. Diocesan advice had been that this should be done
before any re-ordering within. Projected costs could be in the order of £150,000 and a loan might be required.
It was also agreed to investigate further the investment funds that we have
(about £45,000) to see if we can use them for this purpose.
A response was agreed to A Way Forward, a paper from the deanery
about the future of St Michael's, All Saints and St Luke's.
It was also agreed to select the following members of the Shared Ministry
Team:
- Barbara Chambers (non-cell pastor)
- Eric Deninson (youth)
- Ali Dobson (children)
- Agnes Law (welcome)
- Jan Matthews (worship)
- Steve Matthews (cell pastor)
- Shirley Wallin (administration)
(Please pray for them as they start to meet together and work together)
The pattern of Christmas services was agreed with there being a joint service
of Holy Communion at 10.30 am on 30 December (but without lunch afterwards).

South American Mission Society (SAMS)
News from Peru is of the earthquake in August measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale which shook the cities of Lima, Canete, Chincha, Ica
and Pisco. Alejandro reports that their diocese is doing some wonderful work helping people in Ica with food, medicine, clothes and
other necessities, through their social work department 'Communion Peru'. There are more than 500 dead, and 1000 injured people in
hospital. Alejandro praises God and Arequipa was undamaged as they are a thousand miles from Lima but he asks for prayer for his
family, as they were burgled in July and everything of value was taken from the house. Trusting in God, Alejandro says that God is
teaching him not to rely on material things.
In the Colca Canyon the work is very hard with considerable resistance to the gospel, but Alejandro continues to minister there, trusting
that the Lord will do the work in his own time. Please pray for Alejandro, his wife Doris and children, Rolando, Alejandro, Carlos and
Helen, especially for Helen and Doris, that they will not be afraid to stay in the house on their own after the robbery and for Alejandro
junior, that God will provide him with another keyboard which he needs for his studies. Thank you.

Bulbs, Bulbs and Toilets
Looking after God's world! A big thank you to the many people who turned up last Saturday (29 September) to help with bulb planting.
We planted nearly 5,000 bulbs in the church grounds and can look forward to a dazzling spring display all around the church-snowdrops,
crocuses, daffodils and bluebells (English variety). We also planted up over 200 small pots with 3 crocuses each, decorated by the
children, for our Harvest service. Some are left, so please take one or two with love from St Luke's. We also gave away low energy
light bulbs; we still have a few left so there is one for each household as long as they last. We also have 'save a flush' bags which
can be placed in the cistern of your toilet and this saves a litre of water each time you flush! All these things help to look after
God's world.

Toybox
I recently received a letter from Jenni Dyson at Toybox. In her letter she thanked God that they had been able to reach out to three
times as many children this year. Jenni went on to say how many of the children they worked with were ‘classed as untouchable
because they smell, have diseases and are considered the lowest form of life, unloved and uncared for….When the workers are
with the children, many just want a hug...someone to love and care for them unconditionally—the human touch.’ She thanked

a child through Toybox. (Leaflets at the back of church) Thank you. Janette Burridge

Christmas
Shoe Box Appeal
The Knitting Group have been supporting the Samaritan’s Purse Christmas Shoe Box Appeal as Carol has helped to check boxes in the
warehouse and found that many did not have a good variety of items inside. Also certain things have to be removed because they are not
suitable and need replacing with an alternative item. The volunteers therefore require “fillers” to ensure that each box
will be a real joy to the child receiving it. The charity’s mission statement is: "The power of a simple gift—meeting
critical needs of victims of war, poverty, famine, disease, and natural disaster, while sharing the good news of Jesus Christ." The
PCC/World Mission Group has given us permission to ask the congregation of St Luke’s Church for items to go in the shoe boxes.
We are already knitting hats, scarves, mitts, gloves, small toys etc. Please could you consider donating a small item that might go in
a shoe box—see below. (There will be a box left at the Welcome Desk in church for any items you may wish to donate.) Goods are
needed by the end of October, ready for the warehouse opening in November: please consider adding a small extra to your shopping basket!
For more information please contact Carol Roocroft, Barbara Chambers or Brenda Morris.
Items Suitable for the Shoe Boxes:
Toys—something to love: bear, soft toy, tennis ball, finger puppet, jigsaw, yo-yo, small musical instruments, cars,
dominoes, snap cards, dolls, clip on earrings, hair accessories etc.
Educational Supplies—something to do: felt pens, pens, pencils, pencil sharpeners, rubber,
colouring book, notepad, picture/puzzle book, chalk, pencil case, stickers etc.
Hygiene items—something to use: toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, comb, hair clips, bar of
wrapped soap, flannel etc.
Other items—something to eat or wear: sweets (sell by date to be at least March of the following
year) gloves, scarf, sunglasses, cap, hat, bangles, necklaces etc.
The following items cannot be put in the Shoe Boxes:
Food—chocolate, crisps, biscuits, tinned food or cakes (or any other food)
Medicine—medicines or vitamins of any kind
War Related Items—toy guns, soldiers or knives
Fragile Items—glass containers, mirrors

Re-ordering Meeting Wednesday 11 July
The meeting was well attended and heard and saw a presentation (with the opportunity for questions and observations) by David Roberts,
of how the Church might look in the future. We then broke into a number of groups who were asked for their contribution to the
discussions and ideas outlined. Feedback from the groups was very positive regarding the vision put forward. People liked the idea
of bringing the chairs into the round and the flexibility this offered. The vestry area was considered to be a priority for attention.
There were lots of ideas in respect of the back of Church. The PCC have been given a very good response and this will help us move
on and consolidate the ideas put forward. We will continue to consult throughout the whole process. Thank you for your contributions.

Most people do but we are urgently in need of new recruits to train now so that our band can still continue when some of our members
leave the area later in the year. It takes only a month or two to learn (with one-to-one tuition provided), gives a lot of pleasure
and personal satisfaction and, with experience, the chance to ring at bell towers in this area and all over the country. Whole families
can join in and anyone from about 10 yrs. old upwards (tall enough to reach the bell rope!) If you think you might give it a try,

Toybox
The Toybox Charity helps lots of children in different ways, from enabling the children to receive an education, to simply giving them
a home with loving parents. Many of the children are on the streets through no fault of their own. They arrive there because their
parents can't or won't look after them.
Toybox is continuing its work in Guatemala but is reaching out further into Latin America to Cochobamba in Bolivia.
They have joined together with local people who work on the streets and project workers on 'Red Alert' for vulnerable children. This
project involves taxi drivers, market traders, station staff and bus drivers etc who can spot a new face on the streets as soon as they
arrive and can direct them to a safe place as soon as possible. This will hopefully stop these children from becoming 'street children'
addicted to drugs etc.
The Oeser project is part of the red alert program and provides for over 300 children and teenagers aged between 6 months and 17 years
old. It provides families with care, counselling and education
The sponsorship programme now includes children in Bolivia. If you would like information on this please see the leaflets at the back
of church.
If you want to find out more log onto the Toybox website. There is also some information
on the board at the back of church.

Peru
The latest news from Peru comes from the Bishop of Peru, the Rt Rev William Godfrey (Bishop Bill). The Bishop visited the site of the
new mission centre in the Colca Canyon in December 2006 and sends us the following report on the buildings progress.
The roof of the ground floor is now in place and the first floor will
house the kitchen, dining room, a bedroom and two bathrooms. When finished the mission will be faced with stone from the surrounding
hills and the roof will be thatched, all of which will blend in perfectly with the surrounding area. The views of the Colca Canyon,
one of the deepest in the world (over 3/4 mile at some points) are spectacular.
The mission centre is a quarter of a mile outside the local town, Cabanaconde, and will serve both the local town and the 12 villages
on the other side of the Canyon. Many of the villages are over a day’s walk away, along narrow mountain paths. Mission teams
will go out from the Centre and local catechists will be brought in for training and support. The Mission will have its own donkeys
and mules, an essential means of transport in the mountains.
There are some pictures of the building work on the board at the back of
Church. Our link partner Pastor Alejandro Mesco is the mission priest in charge of the work and for several months now he has been
living on site, 7 hours from his family in Arequipa. Please pray for him serving and witnessing in a different culture, with its problems
of superstition and alcohol, and pray for his wife Doris and family.
I will be holding a cake sale on Parade Sunday, 11 February. All funds raised will go to Alejandro to help finance the building of the
mission. Hazel Crossley who has been working with Alejandro Mesco in Peru will be speaking at our 11 am service on that day. Thank you
for your support. Joyce Fell

St Luke's Church Grounds - Breathing Places project
In November we held a display to generate ideas about the above project, a programme supported by the BBC and funded by the National
Lottery. We submitted our bid in December with support from the church family, Crosby traders, St Luke's school, a local care home,
Mencap and many others. We will hear in May about whether we are successful in our bid for £9,900 but in the meantime we are
making a start. This week St Luke’s children will be planting an ornamental hedge at the front of the graveyard. We hope to
involve Crosby High School and some people from Mencap soon. One Saturday morning in late February we will be planting groups of
shrubs along the railings next to The Bypass—a great event for cell groups, families and everyone else! The major part of our
bid is to create a community garden behind the grassed area beside the church hall. Do pray that God will work through this way of
looking after the church grounds both for people and for wildlife. Steve Matthews

challenge, inspire, affirm and give confidence to parishes and deaneries so that they can all become more dynamic, more creative and
more determined in mission. The Roadshow is at St John’s, Ainsdale on Thursday 8th at 7.00 pm. We will meet in the car park at
