Buy Nothing Day: Saturday 28 November
This highlights the environmental and ethical consequences of shopping. The developed countries — only 20% of the world population — are
consuming over 80% of the earth’s natural resources, causing a disproportionate level of environmental damage and an unfair distribution
of wealth. It could be the biggest 24-hour detox from shopping—ever! People around the UK will make a pact with themselves to take
a break from shopping as a personal experiment or public statement and the best thing is—IT’S FREE!!!
For more details go to www.buynothingday.co.uk.

from the Eco Stall in the coffee lounge. Other information can be found at www.tearfund.org/Campaigning.

Swine Flu: Archbishops' advice on sharing of Communion
[information copied from the Church of England website]
23 July 2009
The Archbishops of Canterbury and York have today written to Bishops in the
Church of England recommending the suspension of the sharing of the chalice at communion.
The Archbishops’ letter follows advice from the Department of Health
not to share “common vessels” for food or drink.
For those who wish still to offer both bread and wine, the Archbishops have
recommended use of “personal intinction by the presiding minister” allowing the priest to dip communion wafers in the chalice
before handing them out to communicants.
The full text of the letter follows:
The Feast of St Mary Magdalene
22nd July 2009
Dear Colleague,
It now seems right to offer guidance at a national level about how the
Church of England’s worship might best take into account the interests of public health during the current phase of the swine
flu pandemic.
The Department of Health have recently advised us that “in a pandemic
it makes good sense to take precautions to limit the spread of disease by not sharing common vessels for food and drink”. In
the light of this advice, we recommend those presiding at Holy Communion suspend the administration of the chalice during this wave
of pandemic flu [1]. For those who still wish to offer in both kinds, we recommend the practice whereby the presiding
minister, whose hands should have been washed with the appropriate alcohol based rub before handling the elements and the vessels,
personally intincts all wafers before placing them in the hands of communicants. This is a practice widely observed in Anglican churches
throughout Africa. Communicants receiving in this way need to be confident that the clergy and all assistant ministers follow the
relevant guidance on hygiene.
The Bishop of Ripon & Leeds circulated substantial guidance, including
a summary of the government’s advice, with his letter
of 23 June. Many of you have already issued local guidance based upon its content. We regard it as important that
those presiding at Holy Communion are aware of this advice and
of that contained in this letter. They should offer guidance to the congregation about appropriate precautions in receiving
communion and exchanging the peace.
We shall keep this advice under review and will ensure that the detailed
guidance provided on the Church of England website is kept up-to-date. In the meantime, we wish to express our gratitude
to you and those who share your ministry for the pastoral care and service offered at this time of national concern.
+Rowan Cantuar
+Sentamu Ebor
[1] The administration of Holy Communion in the Church of England is principally
governed by section 8 of the Sacrament Act 1547,
which provides that
'… the… most blessed Sacrament be hereafter commonly delivered and ministered unto the people… under both the kinds,
that is to say of bread and wine, except necessity otherwise require…'
A
downloadable copy of the letter (.rtf) is available here.

Mission Shaped Ministry Course: 10/17/24 June at 7.30 pm Moor Lane
Methodist Church
New world, new church? Our world and our lives have changed radically in the last twenty years, but has the church adapted to this change?
Do we need a changed church for a changing world? Are new forms of church really possible? If so, how can they be developed? The aim
of the mission shaped ministry course is to explore the ‘why’ of creating ‘fresh expressions’ of church rather
than the ‘how’. The three week course takes us on a journey looking at the ever changing nature of our social communities
and why the church needs to rethink its approach to those communities in meaningful and relevant ways. It is being run by the Revd Rod

Week of Prayer: 14 to 21 June
As part of the Year of Continuous Prayer, a special week of prayer has been planned for 14 to 21 June. It is a week set aside when all
the churches in the prayer chain have an opportunity to pray about the same issues, along with other churches across the region.
We have issued a Prayer Guide giving suggested topics for each day during the week, which can be picked up from the back of church.
The aim is for people to use them in their private prayer time. They are also a resource that can be used in cell groups or prayer
meetings.

Memorial Seats in St Luke's Gardens
We have been fortunate to receive further Lottery funding. This will go towards new railings along the ‘daffodil bank’, re-laying
the back path in the graveyard to make it accessible for wheelchair users, and new seating. We have asked Simon O’Rourke (who carved
the eagle and benches) to come and carve a cross for the garden for reflection and some benches on 9 and 10 July. We have space for 7
benches; two people have already confirmed interest. The subsidised cost will be £200. The benches could have words carved (in
memory of…), together with a short verse from the Bible plus animal or bird. Please let Steve Matthews know if you are interested
by 18 June 928 7025.

Latest news from Malcolm and Elizabeth Molyneux
Our enormous thanks to St Luke's for all your interest and continuing support. Liz and I have entered a new(ish) phase of our lives,
in that we both technically 'retired' on 1 January 2009. However life is not noticeably different - we are still doing much the same
things, full-time. We each now have a 40% contract with the College of Medicine, while continuing research and other activities (which
seems to add up to 110% as usual), and of course we receive pensions based on our previous employments…

Green Tip
Tearfund’s Carbon Fast: 25 February to 11 April 2009. Fast and pray with Tearfund this Lent to cut your carbon use and help protect
poor people from climate change. ‘Love does no harm to its neighbour’ (Romans 13.10) Climate change can mean our neighbours
go hungry because of drought, or lose their homes because of floods. Faced with that reality, there are many things we can do, acting
as part of the global church’s response, to change the way our lives impact poor communities. Bishop James Jones writes ’As
we pray daily for God’s will to be done on earth, as it is done in heaven, the Carbon Fast is a practical step towards a fairer
world, a sustainable planet and the earthing of heaven. Join us as the Carbon Fast goes global in 2009!

Letter in the Crosby Herald
Pete Spiers has had the following letter published
in the 22 January 2009 issue of the Crosby Herald.
[25 January 2009]
AS A congregation, St Luke's Church, together with the other members of
Churches Together in Great Crosby (CTiGC), are very concerned about what has been happening in Crosby Village and our own recent
community reflection underlines this.
We have tried to express our concerns in a number of ways: we have been
thinking about and praying in our services for those whose lives are affected when businesses close and they are made redundant.
We also pray for guidance for all those who have to make decisions in
this time of 'credit crunch'.ŠWe have provided space for the lorries and vans that came for the continental markets and our
hall is used by countless community groups and children and youth organisations.
We have expressed our concerns along with CTiGC over the threat to free
parking in the village.
Personally I have attended the Crosby Area committee to ask what Sefton
Council can do about the village's regeneration.
While I would echo Councillor Martyn Barber's call for private investment
in Crosby village (Crosby Herald, January 15), it would also seem to me essential that as as a community we need to think
seriously about what exactly we would like to see.
We will only see new businesses when they are confident that the community
want to have them here and would use them rather than go elsewhere. There will also need to be a 'mix of use' with community facilities,
residential accommodation and services.
As a church in the heart of Crosby we would like to think we have Crosby
in our heart and to that end we are embarking on our own re-building and re-ordering plans so that we might continue to serve the
community as we have been doing for 156 years already.
In this time of economic recession, this is a sign of hope and a statement
of our faith that Crosby has a future and now is the time for us all to come together and discover what that is.
REV CANON PETE SPIERS,
St Luke's Church, Great Crosby
Christian Ecology Link
Loving Father, we thank you for all the visionaries who work to channel the earth’s products to the needy and underprivileged.

That’s a wild idea
We have the opportunity to apply for another £5000 Big Lottery funding to enhance the work we have already done in the grounds.
This is still part of the BBC’s Breathing Places initiative. They recommend we use part of the funding to tie in with the Springwatch
Open Weekend in early June. Ideas so far include a formal opening of our gardens, a taster session in conservation skills, and offering
guided walks in the grounds. We also hope to include the re-design of the entrance to the graveyard and promoting recording of wildlife
by St Luke’s pupils. If you have any suggestions, have a word with Agnes 924 3448 or Ann Somers 284 9312 by next Sunday, 1 February,

6.30 pm Service
The feedback from the meeting of the 6.30 congregation last year was very positive and as many will be aware we are a small group of
people seeking to implement some of the changes which people said they would like. There was nothing that people wanted to take away
but lots of suggestions about things to add. We have started to have a different style of service on the first Sunday of every month
and hope that people have enjoyed them. All the other services will remain the same. We would like to encourage everyone across the
congregations to come and join us for the services which are coming up. On 1 February we have a meditation led by Margaret Quayle
when we are expecting God to speak personally into our lives. On 1 March one of our cell groups will be leading a Praise and Worship
service with a difference! On 5 April TAG will be organising and leading the service and there will be a healing service coming up
in the near future. All these services will be kept to an hour in length and everyone is very welcome.

World Mission Sunday
St Luke's marks 11 January 2009 as World Mission Sunday. The following leaflet was given out
in church on the day.
Pray, Give, Go
Welcome to World Mission Sunday. Today we would like to take the opportunity to express our gratitude for all the support the World Mission
group have received throughout the past year.
Support comes in many forms. Perhaps you attended a Quiz night, bought Traidcraft
goods, prepared a shoe box, had a cream tea, took a collecting box home or very importantly supported our partners through prayer. The
ways in which our work is supported are too numerous to mention.
The organisations we support are always looking for a little extra help.
No matter your age all you need is enthusiasm and a capacity to care. From on-street collecting or spending a few hours in SWACA's (Sefton
Women and Children's Aid) shop in Knowsley Road or for the young adventurer the SAMS Latino Experience. Voluntary opportunities abroad
can be as short as two weeks or 6 months.
We hope that at the least you have found today thought provoking.
If you would like to find out more please don't hesitate to approach the members of the world mission team or call Karen on 0151 474
5252.

your Son who gave us such clear guidance on the use of money. Amen
