CROSS OF NAILS CENTRE
Revs Geoff and Gill Kimber November 2003.
1. OUR BACKGROUND
The Cross of Nails network
- is an informal worldwide affiliation of Christians from all confessions
working for reconciliation,
- began in Coventry Cathedral after the Second World War,
- has developed work through 225 centres in 60 different countries.
- The Bishop of Coventry officially commissioned and sent us to Romania,
at the request of ASCENSIUM, through the Anglican Church Mission Society (CMS).
The Church Mission Society
- is an official missionary arm of the Anglican Church,
- was founded 250 years ago,
- now works all over the world in a great variety of programmes,
- deplores proselytism from other confessions,
- is committed to mission only in and through local churches.
This Cross of Nails centre is not a church.
2. OUR PARTNERS
We work in informal partnership with the following inter-confessional groups
who are in sympathy with our ethos.
- Corpus Christ, a group of theological students and graduates committed
to greater inter-confessional understanding.
- Ascensium, an NGO committed to offering and improving medical, educational
and counselling services in collaboration with the government Health and Education Authorities.
- Darul Vietii, a group of psychologists and medical workers committed to
pro-life education and counselling.
3. OUR GUIDELINES
- We affirm that God the Holy Trinity works within each Trinitarian Christian
confession.
- We affirm that God is the Father of every Christian believer.
- We encourage respect and understanding between the Christian confessions,
humbly acknowledging that God the Holy Spirit of wisdom and truth is not confined to one confession and has much to teach us. To this
end we offer theological resources to all confessions through our Reading Room.
- We encourage all Christians to be faithful members of their own confessions.
- We seek to explore our differences in the spirit of Christ's love.
- We regard all people as sinners needing salvation, and we share a desire
with every confession to encourage all people everywhere to come to faith in Christ the Son of God, and so become members of His Body,
the one, holy, universal and apostolic Church, visible and invisible.
- We acknowledge the fundamental importance of prayer as a means of God's
grace.
- We seek to be channels of God's love and healing to those who have
been hurt by the past.
WHY WE ARE HERE
OUR MISSION STATEMENT
This centre is dedicated to the glory of God
and to fostering increasing understanding and love in Christ between Trinitarian confessions,
through the wisdom and grace of the Holy Spirit.
Members of all confessions are welcome here.
OUR PRAYER
Father, make us one:
Do not make 'them' like 'us',
Do not make 'us' like 'them'
But make us all, more like You.
(Rev Steven Hughes, who originally envisioned the Cross of Nails Centre)
OUR HOPE
"In drawing near to Christ, we draw near to each other"
(Martin Van Elderen)
OUR AIM
In essentials, unity
In non-essentials, liberty
In all things, love
(St Augustine)
