The South American Mission Society (SAMS) is one of the eleven Mission Societies of the Church of England and seeks to encourage interchange between the different parts of the Anglican Communion.

There are three ways for the Church in Great Britain to enter into partnership with the Churches in South America and Iberia.

  • A link Mission Partner
A specific link with a mission partner who has gone out from the UK to South America or Iberia. Clare and Simon Brignall were our link mission partners from 1988 to 1996.
  • A Link Project
An active interest in one particular area of work, such as Bible translation, Society Concern or Medical Care.
  • A Link Latin Partner
Alejandro Mesco and his wife Doris live with their four children Rolando 24, Alejandro 19, Carlos 17 and Helen who is 14. Please pray for Clare Brignall who is still our contact person with the Mescos.

May 2003 - South American Mission Society

Alejandro Mesco our Link Partner thanks us all for our friendship, prayers and financial support. He requests prayer for God's guidance in evaluating possibilities for new work as well as developing the Church's present commitments.

Mrs Ana Maria Perez is the new director of the St Joseph's Children's Home. There are 20 children in the home. Some are orphans, some have parents in prison and others have been abandoned. They range in age from 6 to 12 years. Please pray for Mrs Perez and the staff.

Juan Rivera is the beacon in charge of Christ the Redeemer Church in Belaunde. He is 30 years old, with a good academic and theological background.

Please pray for

  • The St Luke's School - a bigger plot of land is needed for the school. There has been an increase in the numbers of children over the last 3 years, growing from 45 to 120.
  • Julio and Norma Montoya and all the work with children - day nursery, feeding programme, Sunday School etc. Volunteers Miriam Ellwood and Kirsty Ellwood are involved in this.
  • Alejandro and Doris Mesco, their family and the people of Arequipa.

What Can I Do To Help?

Please take a collection box, a gift envelope, (or both!) from the back of Church and fill it.

November 2002 - South American Mission Society

Alejandro Mesco our Link Partner

Alejandro, as Regional director, oversees the two churches, the school and children's home. Earlier this year the Directors of the children's home had to leave and prayer is asked for this "difficult situation".

Pat Blanchard - Co-ordinator of Social Work

Pray that God will continue to provide funding for projects in the "new towns" and for new activities planned for children and disabled people.

Alison Hawksley - Teacher at San Lucas School

Alison and all the staff at San Lucas School, thank God for good end of year results.

Please pray for

  • Marcus Throup, a new SAMS mission partner in Brazil,
  • For Bishop David and Rachel Leake as they prepare to return to the UK later this year after serving the Lord in South America for 39 years,
  • For Alejandro and Doris Mesco, their family and the people of Arequipa.

Inauguration of St Luke's College

In his March prayer letter, Alejandro writes about the inauguration of St Luke's College. Many city authorities came and the Patron of one of the classrooms is the director of the Pueblo newspaper so the news came out in the local paper with a photograph of the Bishop unveiling the plaque.

Alejandro's dream is to have a secondary school and then a centre for occupational education where one day "we will prepare future carpenters, mechanics, computer programmers etc." Alejandro finishes by saying "there is no harm in dreaming is there?"

Please pray for

  • Alejandro, Doris and their family,
  • the children, staff and volunteers in St Luke's School and St Joseph's Children's Home,
  • Bishop William and Judith Godfrey and the expanding work of the diocese,
  • the medical mission during the first two weeks of June and Volunteer Bea Magowan who has gone out to help with it.

Rob Powell NW Area Secretary

On Sunday 12 May Rob will be speaking here at St Luke's, at the 9:00 am and 11:00 am services. Please bring a plate of food and come and enjoy a parish lunch in the Hall, after the 11:00 am service.

What can I do to help?

Please, pray for the finances needed to purchase the extra desks and blackboards for St Luke's School. Take a collection box, a gift envelope, (or both) from the back of Church and fill it. Thank you and God bless you.
